The Art of Presence: Women in 2025 and the Power of Self-Expression
In The Art of Presence: Women in 2025 and the Power of Self-Expression, Annita Apostolidou Platis reflects on women’s empowerment in art, creativity as resistance, and the importance of taking up space through self-expression.
"article by Annita Apostolidou Platis"
The Challenge of Taking Up Space
For women in creative industries, taking up space—owning our ambition, demanding recognition, and embracing our artistic voice—has never been easy. From haute couture ateliers to art galleries, from jewelry design studios to curatorial spaces, women’s creativity has often encountered barriers.
Yet, creativity is power, and the ability to transform an idea into an artwork, a garment, or a story is one of the most profound forms of self-expression.
On this International Women’s Day, I reflect on what it means to be a woman in 2025—how far we have come and the work that remains in ensuring that our voices, art, and ambitions are not just heard but valued.
My Creative Journey: From Haute Couture to Fine Art
My artistic path has never been linear—it has been a constant evolution.
From a young age, fine art was my first language. Under the guidance of my first mentor, I developed a deep appreciation for form, color, and storytelling through painting. However, my artistic journey led me into the world of haute couture and jewelry design, where craftsmanship, movement, and material became my tools for expression. Fashion was never just clothing—it was sculpture, identity, and narrative.
Yet, creativity is limitless. I didn’t just return to fine art—I expanded my creative world. Transitioning from traditional painting to mixed media, I embraced new techniques, blending acrylics with digital collage, merging classical artistry with modern innovation. As a curator and exhibition essayist, I found a new dimension of storytelling, shaping artistic dialogues beyond my own work and amplifying the voices of other artists.
Each shift came with challenges—moments of doubt, questioning whether I needed to prove myself again. But I realized that creativity is expansion, not limitation.
Just as mythological women like Medusa and Hippolyta were once framed through a male lens—either as monstrous figures or unattainable ideals—modern women continue to challenge outdated narratives. We reclaim our stories, just as artists and writers have reclaimed these legends, revealing the depth, strength, and complexity that was always there.
Women in 2025: Moving Beyond Permission
In 2025, women no longer need permission to take up space. Yet, many of us still hesitate—we second-guess ourselves, we shrink, we hold back.
Society often labels female ambition differently. Where men are called visionary, women are sometimes labeled too much. Where men are praised for leadership, women are asked to be more approachable. These narratives are shifting, but not fast enough.
But here is what I have learned:
🔥 We do not need validation to pursue our ambitions.
🔥 Our creative voices matter—even when they challenge convention.
🔥 Taking up space is not about being loud; it is about standing in your power.
In my journey as a designer, artist, curator, and writer, I have learned that each transition, every obstacle, and every reinvention was a chapter of growth—not a setback.
Women in 2025 must own their space. Whether in boardrooms, galleries, or studios, our work deserves to be seen, valued, and celebrated on our own terms.
Creativity as Power: My Message to Women in 2025
For women stepping into creative fields today, my message is simple:
✨ Do not shrink yourself.
Your artistic voice is valid. You do not need permission to create, speak, or share your vision.
Your ambition is not a flaw. You are allowed to dream big, take up space, and challenge norms.
Your journey is your own. Whether you stay in one field or transition like I did, evolution is part of growth.
Just as Hippolyta, the warrior queen of the Amazons, ruled with both wisdom and strength, proving that power and creativity are not mutually exclusive, modern women continue to redefine their artistic journey. Like Gaia, the great mother and foundation of life itself, women today shape worlds—not just through creation but through resilience, vision, and the ability to nurture transformation.
Art, in all its forms, is an act of resistance. When we create, we leave behind a mark that speaks louder than words. Through painting, sculpture, poetry, or design, we shape the world. Our work is a legacy.
International Women’s Day: A Reminder to Take Up Space
International Women’s Day reminds me that taking up space is not just about occupying a position—it is about owning our stories, our creativity, and our presence.
The past, present, and future are intertwined. Mythological women like Callisto, Persephone, Hippolyta, Amphitrite, Gaia, and Medusa have been reshaped across history, reflecting the changing perception of female power.
Likewise, as artists, curators, and visionaries, we redefine our creative identities—showing that women’s voices, whether in myth or modern art, are never silenced but continually reborn.
A Call to Action: Take Up Your Space
So, on this International Women’s Day, I ask:
💭 How do you define success on your own terms?💭 Where have you hesitated to take up space, and how can you reclaim it?💭 What message do you have for the next generation of women in creative industries?
Let’s continue shaping a future where women no longer have to ask to be seen—they lead, they create, and they define the world.

"Behind the Mask: What Carnival Teaches Us About Art and Identity"
In Behind the Mask: What Carnival Teaches Us About Art and Identity, Annita Apostolidou Platis reflects on Venetian masks, cultural symbolism, and the duality of art and anonymity, exploring Carnival as a celebration of transformation and storytelling.

"Behind the Mask: What Carnival Teaches Us About Art and Identity"
While I have never experienced Carnival firsthand—partly due to my discomfort with large crowds and my unease with masks that conceal identity—I have long explored its artistic and cultural significance through literature, documentaries, and historical research. As an artist, I find the way different cultures approach Carnival to be a fascinating reflection of societal values, storytelling, and visual expression.
Venice Carnival: A Theatrical Masterpiece /Art & Identity
Among the many global celebrations, the Venice Carnival stands apart for its elegance, theatricality, and historical depth. Unlike the high-energy, immersive revelry of Brazilian or Caribbean Carnivals, Venice transforms its cityscape into a living stage, where masked figures glide through misty alleys, evoking the grandeur of bygone eras.
Venetian masks, such as the enigmatic bauta—characterized by its angular structure, allowing the wearer to speak and drink without removing it—and the classic volto, a smooth, featureless mask that fully conceals the face, symbolize more than just disguise. They represent transformation, power, and mystery—concepts deeply rooted in both Venetian history and artistic traditions.
The idea of playing a role, of momentarily becoming someone else, mirrors the way art allows us to explore different facets of the human experience.
The Duality of Masks: Art and Anonymity
Yet, my appreciation for the visual splendor of Carnival exists alongside a personal reservation—the idea of masks concealing true identity. Historically, they granted freedom of expression, but they also enabled deception. In a world where authenticity is increasingly valued, the symbolism of masks extends beyond the festival, touching upon themes of identity in daily life.
Perhaps this is where Carnival holds its greatest lesson. It invites us to question:
🔹 When do we wear masks in our daily lives?
🔹 Are they shields for self-preservation, or do they allow us to explore different facets of ourselves?
🔹 Can the act of transformation through art and costume reveal something deeper about human nature?
Cultural Celebrations as a Window into Society
Every Carnival around the world is a mirror of its culture, revealing its people’s traditions, struggles, and aspirations. While I may not personally partake in these celebrations, I deeply appreciate their role as artistic and cultural expressions.
Whether through elaborate costumes, rhythmic processions, or symbolic rituals, they offer a unique lens into how societies communicate history, identity, and collective joy.
The Venice Carnival, in particular, resonates with me because of its theatrical essence and its ability to merge art, history, and mystery into a single experience. It is a celebration where fantasy and reality blur, reminding us that art—whether through fashion, performance, or visual storytelling—is a universal language that transcends time and geography.
What Do Celebrations Teach Us?
Carnival, in all its forms, is more than just an event—it is an evolving narrative, a communal act of storytelling. Even as an observer rather than a participant, I find inspiration in its ability to transform cities into immersive works of art.

The Alchemical Art x Annita Apostolidou Platis: My Full Exclusive Interview |Annita Apostolidou Platis|
Honored to share my full exclusive interview with The Alchemical Art, exploring my journey from haute couture to fine art, the role of mythology in my work, and the philosophy behind my EROS Exhibition series.
Exploring Art, Mythology, and Transformation
I am honored to share my full exclusive interview with The Alchemical Art, a platform dedicated to showcasing international artists and exploring the profound narratives embedded in creative expression.
This feature delves into my artistic evolution, from my early influences in Haute Couture Design to my passion for mythology, history, and surreal storytelling. It also offers insights into my participation in the EROS Exhibition, where love, renewal, and cyclical transformation take center stage.
In this interview, I discuss:🔹 How my early artistic journey shaped my creative approach🔹 The influence of mythology, history, and haute couture on my work🔹 The philosophy behind my EROS collection: Message, Blaze, and Regalia🔹 The emotional depth of color and texture in storytelling🔹 Overcoming creative obstacles and embracing new artistic dimensions
My work is a constant dialogue between past and present, an unfolding narrative where symbols, colors, and textures bring emotions to life. I invite you to immerse yourself in this conversation, exploring the stories that shape my vision.
📖 Read the full interview below:
Your artistic journey began at a remarkably young age, with your first mentor recognizing your talent when you were just a child. How has that early start shaped your approach to art today?
Art has always been an intrinsic part of my existence—it was never just something I did, but something I was. My early years, guided by the wisdom of my first mentor, instilled in me a deep reverence for artistic discipline, form, and expression. That early encouragement gave me the confidence to explore beyond conventional methods, to view creation as an extension of my soul rather than a mere craft. It shaped my approach to art as an ongoing evolution, where curiosity and transformation are essential. Today, I embrace art as a dialogue between past and present, always seeking new ways to translate emotions into visual form.
You describe your work as exploring cyclical transformations, blending history, mythology, and nature. How do these themes intertwine in your EROS exhibition pieces?
Love and transformation are inseparable forces, shaping both nature and the human spirit. In EROS, my works reflect this delicate interplay, capturing not only the beauty of renewal but also the vulnerability inherent in metamorphosis. Just as spring unfurls its petals in an endless cycle of rebirth, so too does love—ever-changing, ever-evolving. Mythology and history serve as my compass, guiding the essence of each piece, weaving the past into the present through symbolic storytelling.
"Message" embodies the vibrant spirit of spring, where tulips—symbols of deep love and heartfelt communication—flourish amid a collage of vintage books. This fusion of nature’s blossoms with the enduring wisdom of literature speaks to the timeless conversation between love and knowledge, renewal and remembrance. The piece evokes the poetic exchange of emotions, as though the whispers of past lovers and scholars still linger within its delicate layers.
"Blaze" bursts forth with the fiery intensity of red poppies, capturing the passionate energy of love in full bloom. The interplay of flowers, birds, and delicate insects mirrors the dynamic dance of attraction and renewal, symbolizing the exhilaration of desire and the vitality of new beginnings. The piece pulses with life, embodying the untamed spirit of love’s transformative power.
"Regalia" embraces the majesty of the peony, a flower revered across cultures for its associations with love, honor, and prosperity. Layered with vintage elements and rich textures, this piece is a tribute to the regal essence of affection—a love that transcends time, deeply rooted in history and ritual. The lush reds and soft pinks of the blooms evoke celebrations of devotion, reminding us of love’s ability to flourish with grace and grandeur.
Each artwork in EROS serves as a bridge between past and present, a visual sonnet echoing the eternal cycle of passion, renewal, and rebirth. These pieces are not merely representations of nature’s beauty, but intimate reflections of the human heart—where love, like spring, is both fleeting and infinite.
Your background in Haute Couture Design adds a unique dimension to your art. How does fashion influence the way you create, particularly in terms of texture, form, and storytelling?
Haute Couture is more than design; it is a philosophy, where every stitch, fabric, and embellishment tells a story. That meticulous attention to detail continues to shape my artistic approach. I see texture not just as a visual element but as something felt, much like fabric against the skin. The layers in my compositions mimic the layering of textiles, where depth and movement create an immersive experience. Form, too, plays a crucial role—silhouettes in couture are designed to evoke emotion, just as the figures, surreal female portraits, and abstract elements in my art do. Fashion has taught me that storytelling is not confined to words; it can be woven into the very fabric of a visual narrative.
My time in the world of Haute Couture, particularly upon returning from Milan to Athens, was pivotal in refining my artistic vision. Under the guidance of an esteemed figure in Greek couture, I learned the artistry of balance—how structure and fluidity coexist to create something timeless. That experience instilled in me a sensitivity to composition, where every detail serves a purpose, and every piece carries a sense of elegance, drama, and movement. In my art, this translates to compositions that feel curated, where elements are meticulously arranged to create harmony, much like a couture garment tailored to perfection.
Having faced obstacles, such as your allergy to oil paints, you found new ways to express your creativity. How has overcoming these challenges influenced your artistic evolution?
Art, much like life, is an act of adaptation. My allergy to oil paints initially felt like a limitation, but it became an invitation to explore new mediums that resonated with my vision. Acrylics, with their vivid intensity, became my new language. Ink, with its fluid unpredictability, allowed me to embrace spontaneity. The impasto technique, reminiscent of sculpting fabric, introduced a tactile quality to my work, enriching its depth and movement. Each of these materials gave me new ways to express emotion and narrative, ensuring that my artistic voice remained unrestricted by limitations.
Yet beyond technique, this challenge also rekindled an artistic instinct rooted in my past—collage. From my earliest years, I instinctively assembled cutouts from fashion and art magazines, drawn to the interplay of form, texture, and meaning. This passion carried into my fashion studies, where my portfolio covers became canvases for layered visual storytelling. Over time, my love for collage evolved, seamlessly blending traditional methods with digital possibilities, allowing me to explore a new dimension of artistic composition.
Overcoming artistic limitations reinforced a fundamental truth: creativity is boundless. Obstacles do not hinder the artist; they refine them, pushing them toward innovation and deeper self-discovery. My journey across mediums—whether through acrylics, ink, impasto, or digital collage—has been a constant dialogue between past and present, tradition and transformation. Each technique is a reflection of my artistic evolution, a means of exploring the cyclical nature of renewal and reinvention that defines both art and life itself.
Your mentor once told you, “Even if not everyone loves your work, they will speak of your colors—your true magic.” How do you feel color plays a role in shaping your artistic identity, especially in the EROS collection?
Color is the lifeblood of my work. It is the silent storyteller, the unspoken emotion, the bridge between the viewer and the canvas. My palette is a testament to my artistic journey, blending warm and cool hues in a delicate symphony that breathes life into surreal figures. Some shy away from black, fearing its depth, yet I embrace it—transforming black canvases into luminous showcases, where colors emerge like jewels against the void. In contrast, my works on white canvas burst into cascades of color, reflecting a river of thoughts and unbridled imagination.
My mentor’s words have stayed with me, shaping my belief that colors transcend aesthetic appeal—they speak. In EROS, color becomes the language of love itself. Soft blush tones echo the tenderness of new beginnings, deep reds embody passion’s fire, while vivid burgundy and plum convey the tension and intensity that only love knows. Beige, honey, and golden hues whisper of nostalgia and warmth, like memories bathed in soft light. Every shade holds meaning, guiding the viewer through a journey of longing, intimacy, and transformation.
My colors are not just visual elements; they are emotions materialized.
What do you hope viewers take away from your work in EROS? Is there a particular emotion or reflection you want to inspire?
More than anything, I hope EROS invites viewers to feel—to immerse themselves in the delicate dance between light and shadow, to embrace love in all its forms—its beauty, its fragility, its power to transform. Love is never static; it is fluid, evolving, much like art itself. Whether it evokes nostalgia, longing, or serenity, my wish is that each person finds a personal connection within the pieces, a quiet moment where the artwork speaks directly to their soul.
Each piece embodies the essence of the season with love awakening—contrasting delicate pastels with vibrant scenes of renewal. Rebirth is mirrored in female figures enveloped in floral motifs, accompanied by butterflies symbolizing transformation, birds representing freedom, and bees evoking the persistence of love and creation. Their presence echoes the harmony of nature’s cycle—a dance of pollination, flight, and metamorphosis. Vintage objects weave a narrative of past merging with present, infusing each artwork with a sense of hope and possibility.
Just as spring breathes life into the earth after winter’s slumber, love, too, renews us—unfolding in delicate, ephemeral moments that shape who we become. Through EROS, I invite viewers to experience love’s transformative journey, to see its presence not only in art but in the quiet, unseen spaces of their own hearts.

This feature is not only a reflection of my artistic journey and creative evolution but also a deep dive into my participation in EROS, a curated exhibition that celebrates the transformative essence of love through art.
A Journey Through Art, Mythology, and Haute Couture
From my earliest years, art has been more than a practice—it has been an innate part of my identity. Guided by my first mentor at a young age, I developed a profound appreciation for form, texture, and storytelling, eventually leading me to Haute Couture Design. This influence remains visible in my work today, where the interplay of color, structure, and emotion becomes a visual narrative of timeless elegance and metamorphosis.
In my interview, I reflect on how these elements converge in my creative process, shaping pieces that merge history, mythology, and nature into symbolic compositions. My approach is deeply intuitive, weaving the cycles of renewal, transformation, and rebirth into surreal, textured visuals.
EROS: The Language of Love Through Art
The EROS Exhibition provided a perfect canvas for me to explore love’s cyclical nature—a theme reflected in my featured artworks:
🔸 Message – A visual sonnet of nostalgia and connection, blending vintage books and tulips as a tribute to love’s wisdom and poetic endurance.
🔸 Blaze – A fiery celebration of passion and renewal, where poppies and birds symbolize the vitality of love in full bloom.
🔸 Regalia – A regal ode to devotion and honor, infused with peonies and historic elements, capturing the grandeur and depth of affection.
Each piece within EROS embodies the harmony of love’s evolution, mirroring the rebirth of spring and the delicate balance between memory and renewal. Through my use of rich textures, symbolic motifs, and vibrant contrasts, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in a world where emotions materialize through art.
The Power of Color & Creative Evolution
A key discussion in my interview was the role of color in my artistic identity. My mentor once told me, "Even if not everyone loves your work, they will speak of your colors—your true magic." This sentiment has shaped my approach, where every hue holds meaning—from the soft blush of new beginnings to the deep reds of passion and nostalgia.
Overcoming creative challenges has also been pivotal in my artistic evolution. My transition from oil paints to acrylics, ink, impasto, and digital collage opened new dimensions of expression, allowing me to embrace spontaneity and seamlessly blend tradition with modern innovation.
