Canvas Forms

From stretched canvases to portable pads and custom rolls, each canvas form serves a unique artistic purpose. Explore the options that best support your creative process.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

Canvases are available in various forms:

Canvas panels

Usually made from primed cotton. Keep in mind that they don’t age well, but they are good for practice.

Stretched Canvas

Using stretched canvas reduces the chances that your artwork will be damaged as it holds the canvas in tact, and the stretching is done by cutting-edge technology rather than by hand.

Canvas pads

Pads are sheets of primed canvas that are bound within a book. Ideal for creating while on the move, the sheets used in many pads can be stretched or mounted at a later date.

Similar to canvas panels, however, they don’t age as well and are therefore best for practice.

Canvas rolls

If you want to prepare and stretch your own canvas or to create a very large painting, canvas rolls are great. Made from either linen or cotton, they’re generally sold by the meter.

About Canvas & Art

From its ancient Greek origins to the Renaissance masters, canvas has long been the fabric of artistic legacy. Learn about its evolution and enduring role in art.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

Canvas is an extremely durable, plain-woven fabric. Usually made from cotton, linen or hemp, it’s popular as a painting surface when stretched across a wooden frame (called a ‘stretcher’) and coated with gesso to prevent the paint from coming into direct contact with the canvas fibres (which would eventually cause the canvas to decay).

The word "canvas" is derived from the 13th century Anglo-French canevaz and the Old French

canevas. Both may be derivatives of the Vulgar Latin cannapaceus for "made of hemp", originating

from the Greek κάνναβις (cannabis). Canvas has been used for Art since the early 14th Century,

and one of the earliest surviving oils on canvas is a French Madonna with Angels from around 1410.

It came into common usage in the 16th century during the Italian Renaissance.

A closer look at the essential brush shapes every artist should know — round, square, filbert, and liner — each bringing its own personality to the canvas.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

There are several different types of paint brushes, and more specifically, different shapes.

You have round, square (bright), filbert, and script (line) brushes, some are exclusively for detail work, for edging or for blending.

Different paint brushes are a spice of life and will add a tremendous amount of flavor to all artworks!

“A horse has the capability of giving us escape from reality”

Charcoal and ink artwork by Annita Apostolidou Platis — a study of the horse as a symbol of freedom and transcendence through expressive line and emotion.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

Working with pencils, charcoal, ink, and fine line pens, I sought to capture the horse not merely as an animal, but as a symbol of freedom and transcendence.

Each stroke reflects motion, spirit, and the quiet power of escape — a journey from the tangible into imagination.

Luxembourg Art Prize Participation 2020

Annita Apostolidou Platis participates in the Luxembourg Art Prize with The Princess and the Red Goldfish, a surreal exploration of transformation, renewal, and inner strength.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

My official certificate for my artistic achievements of my participation.

This year I participated with a painting from my series of artworks called “Eternal Lover”.

It is truly a big honor for me to obtain this special Certificate from the Pinacothèque, a private museum located in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Artwork: The Princess and the Red Goldfish
Collection: Eternal Lover

About the Artwork:
The Princess and the Red Goldfish explores perception, transformation, and renewal through a surreal fairy-tale lens. Blending myth and emotion, the piece traces a symbolic passage from shadow to light — a meditation on resilience, self-discovery, and spiritual rebirth.

Artist’s Note:
“In this piece, I sought to merge the fragility of a princess’s gaze with the mythic symbolism of the goldfish — a creature that swims between illusion and truth. The work reflects my vision of transformation: how vulnerability can be both a prison and a threshold to freedom.”
Annita Apostolidou Platis

I want to appreciate the President and Founder Hervé Lancelin and the Members of the Jury for showing great respect for me with this Certificate.

Thank you all!

What Is Christmas?

A gentle reflection on Christmas by Annita Apostolidou Platis — a season of memory, renewal, and timeless light.

Annita Apostolidou Platis

Is it nostalgia for the past — or the quiet promise of renewal?

Christmas is both memory and light: the scent of warmth, the echo of laughter, the gentle whisper of hope returning. It reminds us that even in the stillness of winter, something sacred continues to bloom — love, kindness, and the art of giving.

Artwork: Mystic Guidance from the My Soul Kingdom collection

About the Artwork: Mystic Guidance portrays the cat as a sacred guardian of the unseen realms — a silent observer between worlds. The work explores dualities of existence: light and darkness, movement and stillness, mystery and revelation. Through this piece, the cat becomes both symbol and guide — a keeper of secret wisdom and quiet strength.
